My Ex-Husband Continues to Lend a Hand Around My Home — And It Feels Just Right

My shower’s hot water keeps running out way too fast, leaving me with only enough warmth to shave one leg before it goes icy cold. After checking everything online and tinkering with the mixing valve on the water heater, I reached out to my ex-husband, who is quite the handy plumber. I hesitated to call him, saving it as a last resort.

To my relief, he immediately diagnosed the issue, ordered the necessary part, and came over to fix it on Friday afternoon when he found a moment. Then there was the time I struggled to turn off the pilot light on the fireplace, and he popped in to show me how it was done.

He’s helped with various other tasks too. Once, I was having trouble installing a ceiling fan in the bathroom, and he finished the job for me. On another occasion, while he was picking up the kids, I got stuck trying to hang a picture. I had hit a stud, and he stepped in to help.

He’s incredibly resourceful, and I’ve always admired that trait. If he’s uncertain about something, he’ll take the time to figure it out. He’s more than happy to help when I ask because he wants our kids to be comfortable in their home, which also means ensuring I can take a decent shower. We’ve both realized that it’s better to be amicable and move forward instead of harboring any resentment.

Some might find this dynamic unusual or believe I should tackle these issues independently. However, for us, this arrangement works seamlessly. I should also note that his live-in girlfriend is absolutely wonderful, and she’s perfectly fine with this setup, which I greatly appreciate.

I genuinely try to solve problems on my own before reaching out to him. There are moments when I feel frustrated because I want to handle things without assistance. But given that he lived in this house for nearly two decades and knows every nook and cranny, it makes sense to consult him when issues arise.

He could easily tell me he’s too busy with his job, home, kids, and relationship, but he’s kind enough to guide me through issues or offer to come over to help. My ex and I continue to function as partners in many ways, especially as we raise three teenagers together. Maintaining a friendly relationship makes everything smoother for everyone involved.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have him as a father to our children, and he’s never dismissed my questions or suggested I hire someone else to handle a task—although I do have a reliable handyman. I’m aware that this relationship may not suit everyone; each situation is unique, and it’s essential to prioritize what works for both parties. For some co-parents, limited communication about the kids is perfectly acceptable, and that’s completely valid too.

I recognize that our situation is special, and I’m grateful for it every day. Our teenagers may not fully appreciate it now, but I believe we’re setting a positive example for them. We may no longer be married or in love, but we will always be a team for their sake.
