This news is encouraging, especially considering that while children are less likely to experience severe COVID-19 outcomes, approximately 300 children have succumbed to the virus in the U.S. since the pandemic’s onset, amidst nearly 600,000 total COVID-related deaths.
Should the FDA approve Pfizer’s vaccine for emergency use, the next step will involve a CDC panel that will establish guidelines for distribution, including prioritizing children with underlying health conditions.
Meanwhile, Moderna is also conducting trials for its vaccine targeting teenagers and younger children, with results expected by summer.
