A youthful punk band has captured the spotlight with their empowering anthem, “Racist, Sexist Boy,” which took off over the weekend. This spirited group, known as The Linda Lindas, features four girls between the ages of 10 and 16, and their song boldly addresses issues of anti-Asian American discrimination and misogyny, all while delivering a catchy beat.
Drummer Zoe shares her personal experience that inspired the song: “Before lockdown, a boy from my class told me his dad advised him to stay away from Chinese people. When I revealed my heritage, he backed away. This song is aimed at him and all the other racist, sexist boys out there.”
With a runtime of under two minutes, the message is clear and potent. “You are a racist sexist boy / And you have racist sexist joys / We rebuild what you destroy,” sings Mia, while her bandmates rock out on their guitars.
The Linda Lindas, comprised of sisters Bella, Mia, Zoe, and their friend Lucia, describe themselves as “Half Asian / half Latinx. Two sisters, a cousin, and their close friend [who] channel the spirit of original punk, power pop, and new wave through today’s ears, eyes, and minds.” Despite being in school— with the youngest not yet in middle school— they’ve just signed with Epitaph Records, a major LA punk label, just days after their May 20, 2021, video went viral.
The band formed in 2018 at Girlschool LA, a rock camp designed for women-identified musicians and artists. Even before their record deal, they appeared in the Netflix film Moxie and contributed a song to the documentary The Claudia Kishi Club. In a charming detail, the LA Times notes that they recorded their last album during a sleepover.
“It’s a bit surreal because we’re still at home in our pajamas. Not much has really changed; it’s not like we’re out and about with people saying, ‘Oh, look, it’s The Linda Lindas,’” Lucia remarked. “But yesterday, my social media was flooded with posts about us, and I was like, ‘Wow, this is wild.’ I’ve been getting calls and texts from people I haven’t heard from in years who suddenly know about the band.”
With their newfound fame, Bella is primarily focused on completing her school assignments. “I have like three projects due on Monday, and I haven’t even started,” she admitted just two days post-viral fame.
