As a child, I faced overwhelming depression that only intensified as I grew older, compounded by traumatic experiences that led to severe PTSD. Following a troubling incident that resulted in a drug overdose, my family forced me into therapy. Unfortunately, I soon discovered that my therapist was sharing my secrets with my uncle’s wife, who had always been antagonistic towards me.

This revelation was shocking. What was intended to be a healing process had turned into a source of harm. I promptly withdrew from therapy, which exacerbated my substance abuse and led to an unhealthy relationship. In those critical years, when therapy could have made a significant difference, I completely turned away from it, rejecting the entire field due to that initial breach of trust. Those were difficult years, and I continue to grapple with the emotional scars from that time.

Rebuilding trust in therapy is no easy feat, especially when it comes to mental health. My untreated depression and PTSD took a toll on me, and as an adult, overcoming that deeply ingrained damage has been a relentless challenge. The first step in re-establishing trust in therapy was acknowledging my need for mental health care. For a long time, I remained in denial, trying to push past the pain, but the trauma and depression were always lurking beneath the surface. I learned that seeking help is always possible, regardless of how far back the trauma goes. Ignoring it only allowed it to linger and dominate my thoughts.

Creating a support system outside of therapy was also essential. Once I recognized that I needed to confront my past traumas, I began confiding in a few close friends before returning to therapy. While they couldn’t replace professional help, they provided a starting point for me to express my mental health struggles and feel validated. This small support network ultimately encouraged me to step back into a therapist’s office.

With my support system in place, I began to understand that not all therapists are the same. One person’s unethical actions do not define the entire profession. This lesson was difficult to accept, particularly given my past experiences, but my friends and my commitment to my mental health helped me navigate that hurdle. It took considerable time and effort, but it was well worth it, and I feel more balanced for it.

Mental health is a significant challenge, and self-care is vital. To anyone facing these issues alone, know that you are not invisible. Your support might already be surrounding you; it’s just a matter of recognizing your needs and responding to them. Therapy is a powerful tool for recovery, and I encourage anyone grappling with unresolved emotional pain to seek it out. If I can learn to trust a therapist again after being betrayed, so can you.
