I Reduced My Hair Washing Routine and It’s Made a Huge Difference

It all started in middle school when my once-sleek hair transformed into a frizzy mess. I attribute this change to puberty, which I’ve noticed has happened to my kids too. I remember sitting in history class when a friend of mine let her beautiful golden hair down from a scrunchie. The delightful scent of her Salon Selectives shampoo filled the air, reminiscent of candy apples, and I felt a wave of happiness. She shared that she washed her hair every single morning, and that day, we rushed to the store so she could show me the products she used.

Inspired, I began washing my hair daily, hoping for that luxurious feel and pleasant aroma that would waft around me. After thirty-three years of scrubbing my scalp every morning—I just love showers—my scalp became accustomed to this routine, and skipping a day would leave my head feeling like an oil slick.

Now, as I approach my 46th birthday, I realized it was time for a change. I’ve cut back on washing my hair every day, and I’m amazed by the results. This shift began after my daughter advised me to stop my daily washing habit because it was damaging my hair. She washes her hair once every week or ten days and her hair is thick, long, beautiful, and free from frizz.

Breaking the Habit

So how do you break the habit of daily hair washing? Initially, I had no plan in place. I thought about washing just once a week, but like any other habit, I needed a strategy to avoid slipping back into my old ways.

That’s when I consulted the professionals. Hair stylist Andrea Miller mentioned that “once you stop washing every day, your hair will adjust.” She recommended using dry shampoo (preferably all-natural) and applying it when your hair is clean, as this approach helps prevent oil buildup better than it does at soaking up grease.

Since I work out regularly in the mornings and sweat quite a bit, the urge to wash my hair is strong. Luckily, the dry shampoo advice has been a game-changer. After washing my hair in the morning, I part it into sections before bed, apply the dry shampoo, and then comb through with my fingers. After a shower, I style it, and it feels fresh and clean.

Miller also suggests using a clarifying shampoo a couple of times a month to maintain balance in your hair and scalp. Professional stylist Jamie Lee advises against washing your hair with hot water, as it can lead to increased oil production on your scalp. “Stick to warm water and you’ll find your hair stays cleaner for longer,” she said. To help resist the temptation of getting my hair wet, she suggested wearing a shower cap.

Product Application Tips

Another tip is to be mindful about where you apply your products. Lee advises against putting conditioner on the scalp, as this common mistake can lead to an oily appearance. Instead, focus on washing the roots and conditioning the ends—which has saved me a lot of product.

Finding creative hairstyles has also aided in my transition from washing daily to only two times a week. When I wear my hair up on the second or third day, it helps keep my hands off it. On days when my hair feels too greasy at the scalp, a stylish headband or hat can work wonders since my ends still look great.

I began this journey by skipping one day, then two, and now I can comfortably go three to four days without washing. If you’re looking for healthier hair—my hair has improved in appearance, is growing faster, and my color lasts much longer—try these tips. Plus, you’ll save time and your hair products will last longer. It’s a win-win for both you and your hair.
