As we approach Pride Month, a new global survey reveals that almost one in five young adults identifies as non-heterosexual or non-cisgender, showcasing a notable trend toward gender and sexual fluidity among Generation Z.
“It’s a global trend,” explains Alex Martin, the head of public affairs at Ipsos, in an interview with NBC News. The LGBT+ Pride 2021 Global Survey, released recently by Ipsos, found that 4% of Gen Z respondents—those born after 1997—identify as “transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming, gender-fluid, or other than male or female.” This figure stands in contrast to 2% of Millennials, 1% of Generation X, and less than 1% of Baby Boomers.
The survey also highlights that younger adults are significantly more likely to define their sexual orientation beyond heterosexuality, with a greater number expressing attraction to multiple genders. Overall, 9% of participants identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, or asexual, with the percentage rising to 18% for Gen Z.
Conducted between April 23 and May 7, the survey involved over 19,000 individuals aged 16 to 74 across 27 countries. It not only explored gender identity and sexual orientation but also examined awareness and engagement with the LGBT+ community worldwide. For example, in the U.S., 57% of respondents reported knowing someone who identifies as lesbian or gay, while in Brazil, that figure was 66%. Conversely, in Japan and South Korea, only 7% reported similar connections.
Breaking it down by country, 2.9% of those surveyed in Sweden identified as gender minorities, followed by 2.5% in Germany and 2.3% in Argentina. India had 17% identifying as non-heterosexual, while Brazil and Spain followed closely with 15% and 12%, respectively.
“The trends we observe in the U.S. are certainly not exclusive to the U.S.,” Martin notes. The survey also delves into respondents’ perspectives on equality, anti-discrimination laws, adoption rights, and same-sex marriage, making it a valuable read.
“Transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive individuals, as well as bi+ people, have existed across cultures for centuries, yet they may not always receive visibility,” comments Jamie Williams, President of the Human Rights Council. “This Pride Month—and every month—we should honor our communities facing threats, especially those who are transgender, non-binary, bi+, and asexual.”
