This Summer, Remember: Your Body is Already a ‘Beach Body’

As the summer season approaches, many of us find ourselves yearning for warmer days, often accompanied by the desire to get into shape. With bathing suits hitting the shelves long before the weather warms up, the pressure to look perfect can feel overwhelming. Diet commercials and social media ads seem to flood our feeds, all trying to convince us that we need to change our bodies to enjoy the season.

However, let’s be clear: there’s no such thing as a “beach body,” and you certainly can’t achieve it on demand. Our bodies don’t work that way. I’ve found myself caught up in the allure of the latest diet trends and fitness apps, only to abandon them after a week. But this summer, I urge you to grant yourself the freedom to embrace who you are, just as you are.

We live in a society obsessed with diet fads and the relentless push to get fit—especially as summer nears. It’s as if the fitness industry is trying to sell us summer readiness rather than encouraging us to simply enjoy the season. Remember, you are enough. Your body is enough. You don’t need to chase after the false promises of weight-loss pills or the notion that shedding a few pounds will bring you happiness. What truly brings joy is loving the body that carries you through life—the one that has nurtured your children and embraced your experiences.

Sure, life changes our bodies, and that’s perfectly okay. Love every part of yourself, inside and out. Instead of spending your hard-earned money on diet programs and quick fixes, invest in self-love. Silencing that inner critic is essential. When you look in the mirror, repeat affirmations of beauty and worth until you believe them wholeheartedly.

Each year, the weight loss industry rakes in over $30 billion, banking on our insecurities to sell the latest weight-loss gimmicks. They depend on us feeling inadequate so they can profit from our struggles. It’s a familiar scenario scrolling through social media, seeing posts about dieting or worrying about fitting into a bikini. Yes, exercise and healthy eating have their benefits, but they shouldn’t stem from societal pressure or the belief that you’re insufficient.

Personally, I choose not to wear a bikini, and that’s perfectly fine! I still enjoy the beach with my kids, donning a swimsuit and splashing around in the water. After our beach adventures, we indulge in ice cream topped with Oreo crumbles—because I absolutely love ice cream! I’ll even drive a bit out of my way to get my favorite scoop.

Going to the beach and enjoying ice cream with my children is about creating memories, not about my body. I refuse to let my physical appearance stop me from being present in my kids’ lives. I might download and delete a few more apps this summer, but rest assured that my “beach body” will be defined by my own standards.

So, equip yourself with the knowledge to make informed choices, but also allow yourself the joy of living without the burden of worrying about your appearance. I look forward to a future where we celebrate our beauty rather than striving for an unattainable “perfect” body.

My body is different from others—and that’s okay. This summer, embrace yourself as I embrace myself.
