From The Confessional: The Obsession with Male Anatomy

What’s the fascination with male anatomy? Why do some men seem to flaunt their pride and joy like they’re royalty? Do they truly believe we’re as captivated as they are? From my experience as a mother to boys, it’s evident that this fixation begins at a young age and, as a partner to a man, I’ve learned it can linger far longer.

Let’s be honest here, most of us are not preoccupied with your anatomy throughout the day. We’d much prefer it if you kept it under wraps. Sure, we appreciate what it can do, but let’s not forget, we can find similar utility in products from Target. Feel free to admire your “King Richard” on your own time—just not during diaper changes or when it’s still in hibernation mode.

My partner has such a fixation on his modest endowment that I doubt he’d ever stray; I can’t see anyone else being interested either. One time, he stumbled upon a video of a surgical procedure where skin is peeled off the penis like removing a glove. If I touched him after that, I’m pretty sure he’d scream.

From what I gather, any spare moments I have are seen as opportunities for my husband to demand attention to his anatomy. Can’t I just have a moment to myself without it becoming about him? It’s exhausting. It feels like his entire identity revolves around it—what else is there to our relationship?

It’s puzzling how some men seem to have a direct connection between their anatomy and their thoughts, bypassing rationality altogether. Touching my partner seems to trigger a reaction that makes it all about intimacy, and I sometimes feel guilty for wanting more than just that. After twenty years together, I just want a break.

I’m done with my partner constantly wanting to involve me in physical intimacy. After finally getting our toddler to stop nursing, I want my body back—completely. If only he could understand how little I think about that part of him on a daily basis.

And then there’s the humorous side—like my son announcing “PENIS!” during my conference call, causing quite the stir among my colleagues. It’s both embarrassing and amusing; I have to wonder how much is too much when it comes to discussions about anatomy in my household.

The truth is, little boys seem to have an unending curiosity about it, constantly bringing it up and incorporating it into their lives. I find myself wishing they’d just eat their pancakes without the conversations about their anatomy. It’s perplexing; I can walk around with my own anatomy without feeling the need to showcase it constantly.
