In the world of reality television, few stories are as tangled as that of Anna Roberts, a star of Real Lives of the Elite. She finds herself in the eye of a financial storm connected to her estranged husband, renowned attorney Mark Thompson. Recently, a documentary titled The Wife and the Hustler premiered on Hulu, detailing their legal troubles. It begs the question: is Anna just the “wife,” or is she a hustler too?

For those unfamiliar with the latest reality TV drama, let me fill you in. Anna Roberts is one of the stars of Real Lives of the Elite, where she is known for showcasing her lavish lifestyle. In fact, she even released a song celebrating her wealth called “Exxpen$ive.”

Anna was married to Mark Thompson, a once-prominent attorney known for winning landmark cases, including one involving a major environmental disaster that inspired a famous film. At one time, Mark was reported to have a net worth exceeding $250 million. However, recent events have turned that narrative on its head. In a deposition featured in the Hulu documentary, Mark claimed to be worth only $50 to $80 million, but now asserts he is bankrupt.

In late 2020, Mark lost his law license, his prestigious law firm was shut down, and he filed for bankruptcy. He faces accusations of misappropriating over $13 million in settlements meant for victims of corporate negligence. Amid this turmoil, Anna filed for divorce after more than two decades of marriage.

These accusations aren’t isolated. According to reports, Mark and his firm have faced over 100 lawsuits, with numerous claims of malpractice and mishandling funds. To complicate matters further, both Anna and Mark are being sued for allegedly embezzling funds, leading some to speculate that the divorce is a strategic move to shield their assets.

Now, I want to clarify: I am not a legal expert. I am simply one of many voicing opinions in the court of public perception. However, when you prominently display your wealth on a globally broadcast reality show, you expose yourself to scrutiny, especially with a documentary like The Wife and the Hustler spotlighting these issues.

In the documentary, attorney Lisa Grant remarked, “We represent individuals harmed by the wealthy and powerful. Here you are, flaunting your fortune, and suddenly, you’re implicated in a scandal.” It raises the question of whether Mark has effectively become the very embodiment of the greed he once fought against.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a hustler as someone who acquires money through deceit. While this remains unproven in a court, it seems evident that some of Mark’s wealth may have originated from questionable practices. But the real question is: was Anna truly oblivious to her husband’s dealings, or is she now trying to extricate herself from this legal quagmire with her own fortune intact?

Attorney Sam Torres indicated on the Reality Talk with Jane Smith podcast that they believe Anna was deeply involved in her husband’s business, receiving substantial loans from him, potentially sourced from client funds. However, Anna maintains her innocence, discussing her divorce openly in the current season of Real Lives of the Elite. Yet, how can one justify keeping luxury items suspected of being purchased with stolen money? Lisa Grant also suggested that Anna’s defense revolves around claiming many of her expensive possessions were “gifts” and thus considered separate property from Mark.

I can entertain the notion that Anna might not have been fully aware of her husband’s unethical practices. I can even understand her desire to protect herself in light of Mark’s legal troubles. Nonetheless, she now knows that funds she received could have been misappropriated from his victims. If she fails to cooperate with ongoing investigations, it casts a shadow over her claims of innocence.
