Welcome to the “Ask Home Insemination Kit” advice column, where we tackle all your questions about life, parenting, relationships, and more.
This week:
What should you do when other moms approach you at the playground, but you’re not interested in making ‘mom friends’?
Dear Home Insemination Kit,
Summer is upon us, which means we’re spending a lot of time at the park. I have two kids, ages 4 and 6, and we live just a couple of blocks away from our local playground. I enjoy watching my kids play (they’re finally at an age where I don’t have to hover over them all the time), and I love sitting on the bench with a book in hand even more. While many moms seem eager to socialize at the park, that’s not my scene. I don’t mind being polite with a wave and a smile, but I’m not looking to have lengthy conversations while the kids are playing. I already have enough friends and I’m definitely not into the MLM culture. I just want to read in peace while occasionally checking to make sure my kids aren’t causing chaos. But these moms never seem to take the hint. Do I have to resort to being rude?
Oh, how I look forward to the day when I can sit back and enjoy my book while my kids play freely. That’s a milestone in motherhood, and wanting that time for yourself is totally valid.
You don’t need to be rude, but a little honest yet polite communication might be necessary. Motherhood can be isolating, and it’s understandable that other moms are seeking connection, no matter how short-lived. However, if you aren’t interested in chatting (especially at the park), it’s perfectly fine to let them know.
You might say something like, “I’m really enjoying this book and have been looking forward to it for a while, so if you don’t mind, I’ll be soaking in every moment I can.”
Sometimes, when your kids are playing nicely, other moms might see it as a chance to connect and propose playdates, which is totally fine. But if that’s not your thing, you don’t owe anyone your time. For more insights, check out this helpful blog post related to your situation.
