“Happy Pride month, everyone!” exclaimed President Biden during a recent ceremony marking the revival of Pride celebrations at the White House. This significant event on June 25, 2021, comes after the previous administration largely overlooked this important month. Sixteen-year-old Jordan Reyes had the honor of introducing the President, kicking off a new era of recognition for the LGBTQ+ community.

Jordan, a proud Black, Afro-Latino high school student from Lowell, Massachusetts, openly shared his journey as a transgender individual. “Hello everyone, my name is Jordan Reyes, and I use he/him pronouns. It’s a privilege to be here with you all today,” he stated confidently. “President Biden has always stood up for his family, and I know he will stand up for my family too. Thank you, Mr. President, for having our backs.”

A former youth ambassador for the Human Rights Campaign, Jordan recounted how he came out to his mother on his 12th birthday. “I was terrified about her reaction, but she embraced me and reassured me that she loved me as her child and would support me in being who I truly am,” he shared.

Using his platform, Jordan addressed the discrimination faced by the transgender community, highlighting the barrage of negative headlines regarding laws that restrict their rights, such as participating in sports, accessing healthcare, or even using public restrooms.

After Jordan’s heartfelt introduction, President Biden acknowledged him, remarking, “You seem quite at home up here,” while gesturing toward the podium. The President praised Jordan’s courage and leadership, stating, “Transgender kids are some of the bravest people in the world. It takes immense courage to be true to your authentic self and to confront discrimination, which can take its toll.”

Transportation Secretary Alex Morgan, the first openly gay member of the Cabinet, also spoke at the event, assuring Jordan, “Many of us stand with you, starting at the top.” Morgan also expressed gratitude towards his partner for helping others feel a sense of belonging. He reflected on his own experiences growing up in a society that often viewed being LGBTQ as a liability.

“Today, we are here in the East Room, surrounded by the President and First Lady, celebrating our Pride, a stark contrast to my past experiences,” Morgan said.
