Some People Dream of Vacations, But I Prefer a Staycation

I haven’t taken a trip in quite some time—I’m talking years before the pandemic. During my marriage to my ex, we traveled frequently. There was one summer where we spent every weekend at the lake and took a week-long trip over the Fourth of July. I’ve never felt more exhausted than I did that summer.

Now that I’m single and in control of my choices, I find that what I truly crave is a staycation. Next week, I’m taking time off and looking forward to doing absolutely nothing. I can’t wait to curl up with a book, relax in my home without a lengthy to-do list, and unplug from my phone. I’m eager to binge-watch more than one show on Netflix without distractions.

Perhaps it’s because I’m naturally a homebody or maybe being an introvert plays a part. It’s also worth mentioning that moms often bear the burden of planning vacations—organizing itineraries, packing, ensuring everyone has what they need, all while trying to find a moment to breathe amid the chaos.

I realize that opting to stay home instead of booking a cruise, exploring Nashville, or even camping (no, thank you) might sound boring to some. Yet, I understand the strong desire to escape. While I don’t share that yearning, I’ve heard others express it, and it seems just as intense as my own need for homebound relaxation.

As I wrap up work, the last thing I want to think about is packing. I barely have time to change my oil, let alone plan a vacation. I know that for me, a true getaway means complete unwinding—reading, resting, and catching up mentally. Leaving home just feels like too much effort with all the planning involved; it often leads to a whirlwind of activities and responsibilities upon return, from laundry to picking up the dog and getting back into the work routine.

The saying “I need a vacation from my vacation” exists for a reason—it’s so painfully true. I can recall my pre-kid vacations where I never felt rejuvenated. All I wanted was a week in my own bed.

I’ve traveled while pregnant, with my kids when they were little, and even without them post-divorce, and every time, I’ve thought, I’d rather just stay home. If I could have a week off sandwiched between two mini staycations, I might feel more inclined to travel. However, that rarely happens, so my choice is always clear: a staycation it is.

For me, vacations often lead to overstimulation, and I find myself worn out by day two. I become grumpy and overtired, trying to manage everyone else’s moods while on the trip. It’s exhausting, and I can’t handle the stress.

This has been an ongoing struggle for me. On our honeymoon, we cut our trip short because I was so drained, and the thought of jumping back into everyday life was overwhelming. So while you might be off snorkeling or skiing, I’d prefer to be at home.

The beauty of being someone who prefers a staycation is that we never feel like we’re missing out. We know that staying put is the only way we can genuinely recharge. If you’re interested in more about home insemination, check out this helpful blog post.
