I long for the days when my arms were filled with children. I miss the little hands that would reach for my face and plant sweet kisses on me as I walked through the door. I can still recall the scent of your hair as I carried you to bed each night. Those 6 a.m. moments when you would quietly slip under the covers next to me, eyes still heavy with sleep, murmuring, “Just a few more minutes, Mommy,” when I reminded you it was time to get ready for school and work.
I can’t remember the last time I heard each of you call out, “Pick me up!” with your tiny arms reaching towards me, your soft, five-year-old bodies wrapping around my neck and pulling at my hair. Oh, how I wish I had known that those moments were fleeting.
How I wish I had recognized that it was the last time I would hear your laughter echoing down the hall, the last time you would bounce in your crib, exclaiming, “Mama, I’m AWAKE!” The last time I’d read you a story, when you begged for “Just one more page, Mommy.” The last time I’d kneel in the middle of a street to tie your little sneaker laces, or leap from a park bench to “push me HIGHER!” on the swings. I didn’t realize it would be the last time I’d hear ‘Mommy’ or ‘Mama,’ and that from then on, I would simply be ‘Mom’ or ‘she’ during your teenage moods.
Time moves swiftly, sometimes like tearing off a Band-Aid, and before you know it, you’re grown, seemingly overnight. Yet, I still see you as the little ones you once were. I can still feel your tiny hearts beating against my chest as you drift off to sleep in my arms, milk-drunk. I still remember your small hands and graceful fingers entwined with mine as we venture across the street together.
I will always be your mom, and you will forever remain my babies, no matter how old you get. I don’t think I would have done anything differently; I just wish I had known.
