On July 7, singer Halsey, who is expecting her first child, unveiled the cover art for her upcoming album, set to be released on August 27. The reveal took place at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City, and she looked absolutely breathtaking.
“This album is a conceptual exploration of the joys and challenges of pregnancy and childbirth,” Halsey shared in her Instagram post. “It was crucial for me that the cover art reflected my experiences over the past few months. It speaks to the balance between the Madonna and the Whore, showcasing that my identity as a sexual being and my role as a mother can coexist harmoniously. My body has been viewed in various ways over the years, and this image represents my reclaiming of autonomy while highlighting my strength as a life-giving force.”
As reported by Variety, Halsey wrote all of the songs on the album, collaborating with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails. “This cover image celebrates both pregnant and postpartum bodies as beautiful entities worthy of admiration. We still have a long journey ahead in eliminating the stigma surrounding bodies and breastfeeding. I hope this can be a step forward!”
Earlier this year, Halsey referred to her baby as her “rainbow,” a term used for a child conceived after a loss. In 2018, she courageously opened up about a miscarriage that occurred during one of her performances. “Before I could comprehend what that pregnancy meant for my future, my career, or my relationship, I found myself on stage dealing with a miscarriage. The experience of performing while facing hundreds of teenagers, knowing I was bleeding through my clothes, made me realize I never want to choose between my passion and my well-being again,” she recounted during an appearance on a talk show.
Halsey is leveraging her platform to advocate for the normalization of breastfeeding and the acceptance of pregnant and postpartum bodies, and that’s something we wholeheartedly support.
