While thick, bushy eyebrows are currently all the rage—captivating beauty bloggers and influencers alike—not everyone feels compelled to embrace this trend. Just because beauty experts endorse fuller brows doesn’t mean they suit everyone’s unique style. For many, thin eyebrows—whether naturally occurring or carefully maintained—remain a cherished option.
Eyebrow scrutiny is nothing new. In the late 90s and early 2000s, the trend leaned heavily towards pencil-thin brows, leaving those with naturally thick eyebrows feeling out of place. Now, the tides have turned, and achieving the coveted full brow look has become a quest for many.
Staying on top of beauty trends can be a costly pursuit, and this applies to thick eyebrows too. If you’re naturally endowed with full brows, congratulations! But for others, the journey to a perfect brow may involve a slew of products like specialized eyebrow pencils, brow gels, frequent visits to specialists, tinting, microblading, or even tattooed brows. Some are resorting to using Elmer’s glue sticks to secure their brows in place, while others are opting for “brow laminating,” which essentially perms the hair to give it a straighter appearance. All these methods can be time-consuming and expensive, and not everyone is willing to invest in such an extensive process.
As someone who once succumbed to the thin eyebrow trend of the ’90s, I understand the reluctance to go through all that hassle. My brows have always been a bit unruly, marked by random sparse areas that demand considerable upkeep to align with current styles. A makeup artist plucked my brows into submission back in the late ’90s, leaving me with just a handful of hairs on each side. Thus began my self-taught journey of filling in the gaps, but thin brows didn’t flatter my round face, and my makeup skills were lacking. Thankfully, my brows eventually grew back, but many others aren’t as fortunate.
Not everyone has the luxury of naturally thin brows that were once in vogue, just as not everyone is blessed with full, bushy brows today. Some individuals are left with overly plucked brows due to past trends, while others have made permanent alterations with microblading or tattooing.
Eyebrow styles have shifted dramatically over the decades—ranging from arched and round to thick and thin—and they will continue to evolve. Each era has showcased its own brow trends, and it’s inevitable that new styles will emerge.
If following the latest trend is paramount to you, go for it. However, no one should feel pressured to compromise their natural brows simply to conform to beauty standards. Contrary to what the beauty industry and social media may suggest, the thickness or thinness of your brows does not dictate your beauty.
So if you naturally have full brows, enjoy it while it lasts. And if your brows are on the thinner side, consider your choices carefully before committing to anything permanent or pricey. Ultimately, the best beauty trend is embracing your true self. If thin brows make you feel confident, then rock them! Remember, the only opinion that truly matters is your own.
