In a heartwarming turn of events, a black cat named Binx was found safe and reunited with his family two weeks after the tragic collapse of the Champlain Towers South condo in Miami. This joyous reunion was described as a “miracle” by Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.
“I’m delighted that this small miracle can bring some light to a family in need during such a painful time,” Levine Cava stated at a news conference on Friday.
According to reports from the Miami Herald, a volunteer who was feeding stray cats in the area discovered Binx near the collapsed site and brought him to Kitty Campus, an organization dedicated to the care of community cats in Miami Beach, where he was identified as belonging to a family from the building.
“There are many cats in the vicinity, and we have been working with our Animal Services Department to set live traps and assist those feeding the cats,” said Levine Cava.
Gina Nicole Vlasek, co-founder of Kitty Campus, shared the news on Facebook, describing the day as “one of the most amazing.” She wrote, “A black cat resembling Binx from #904 was brought to our facility last night by FEMA. The cat was found near the rubble!”
Vlasek expressed gratitude, stating, “All we needed was a ray of hope in this tragedy. One of the survivors came to see the cat and confirmed it was hers. We are so thankful to help in any small way.”
During the briefing, the mayor also shared that the death toll from the condo collapse had reached 79, with 53 identified and 61 still unaccounted for. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who helped reunite [Binx] with his family,” Levine Cava tweeted.
