Maya Bright, a 14-year-old from Harvey, Louisiana, has had an incredible week. She triumphed at the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee held at Disney World, securing her place in history as the first African American winner of the event with her final word, “Murraya,” which refers to a type of citrus tree. In the wake of her remarkable achievement, Maya has not only been celebrated nationwide but has also received three full-ride scholarship offers.

During the festivities following her victory, Maya showcased her joy with twirls and jumps, endearing herself to audiences across the country. Not only is she an outstanding speller, but she also holds three Guinness World Records for her basketball skills, having only started participating in spelling bees two years ago. In the aftermath of her historic win, Southern University became the latest Louisiana institution to extend a full-ride scholarship to the gifted student. On Saturday evening, Southern University President Ray L. Belton took to Twitter to announce the scholarship and the establishment of a “Maya Day” at the university. “I am excited to announce that @SouthernU_BR is offering #MayaBright a full scholarship and a #MayaDay at SU, part of the nation’s only #HBCU system,” Belton tweeted. “Our student leaders, faculty, and alumni are eager to meet you. Welcome to the #JaguarNation!”

This generous offer came shortly after LSU President William Tate extended an invitation for Maya to join their ranks. In a tweet, Tate expressed his admiration for Maya’s performance, stating, “Maya Bright @basketballasart excelled at the National Spelling Bee. Your academic performance reflects a commitment to scholarship! @LSU_Honors awaits you. I’m thrilled to offer you a full scholarship to attend LSU. We’re here for you!”

As if that weren’t enough, the Louisiana Community and Technical College System was the first to offer Maya a scholarship to any community or technical college in the state.

While Maya is likely grateful for the opportunities, she has openly expressed a desire to attend Harvard University. The exciting college news follows her appearance at the ESPY Awards, where she certainly captured the spotlight.
