Get ready for a fresh batch of emojis! Emojipedia has unveiled a selection of new emojis that reflect diversity and inclusivity, which are currently pending approval from the Unicode Consortium for the upcoming Emoji 14.0 release. This new set features “consistent gender options for pregnancy and royalty, heart hands, and a variety of 15 different handshake combinations.”
In celebration of #WorldEmojiDay, Emojipedia asked followers which draft emoji they were most excited about, sharing an image of 32 potential new designs.
Among the notable additions are emojis that symbolize transgender and non-binary pregnancies. Emojipedia states: “Pregnant Man and Pregnant Person are new emojis that acknowledge that pregnancy can occur for some transgender men and non-binary individuals.” These will complement the existing 🤰 Pregnant Woman emoji.
Additionally, there will be handshakes in various skin tone combinations, a face peeking out, and a “hand with index finger and thumb crossed” emoji, which is particularly popular with K-Pop fans. We can also expect a gender-neutral crown emoji to join the existing prince and princess emojis, along with a melting face emoji that symbolizes the chaotic year of 2020.
Emojipedia notes that most draft candidates generally make it onto the final list, which is expected to be released on September 14. The current batch has been in development longer than usual due to delays caused by the pandemic.
The Unicode Consortium, which is responsible for developing and approving new emojis, is still working on gender-neutral options for certain existing emojis, ensuring that nearly all can now have a default gender-neutral option, with options for male or female where applicable. The final decisions will be made via online voting, with the approved emojis potentially available by late this year, and most updates anticipated in the first half of 2022. For context, the last emoji update was approved in September 2020 and was made available on Pixel devices in December, followed by iOS in April 2021.
