My Partner Struggles with Alcohol, and I’m Unsure How to Cope

I’ve always been in relationships with individuals who enjoyed an occasional drink. My past partners tended to have a casual relationship with alcohol, whether it was a few drinks at social gatherings or a couple of beers with dinner—nothing that ever raised any red flags.

During my first date with Jake, the man I’ve fallen deeply in love with, he described himself as a social drinker. We connected instantly, discussing everything from our children to favorite foods, and it felt like we truly understood one another. However, after about six months of dating, I began to notice concerning patterns. Although Jake often abstained from drinking for long stretches, when he did indulge, he would binge drink and make poor choices.

I observed him becoming increasingly focused on alcohol while we dined out, ordering multiple drinks before finishing the first. He would neglect to eat and, even on hot days, wouldn’t hydrate with water. It was as if he was on a mission to get intoxicated.

Initially, when I confronted him about it, he dismissed my concerns, insisting there was no problem. He claimed that if he had a drinking issue, he would be consuming much more alcohol and doing so alone. Having never been with someone who had alcohol-related issues, I started to doubt my own feelings. His behavior made me anxious, especially knowing that he wasn’t mean when he drank, but something about it made me uneasy. This anxiety began to disrupt my sleep whenever I anticipated a situation where he might drink.

The turning point came when I discovered he drove home after sharing an entire bottle of liquor with a friend. He insisted he was fine to drive, as it was only a short distance home. I made it clear that this was a significant issue, and I demanded that he stop drinking and driving altogether. He promised he would, and I chose to stop drinking around him.

Despite my efforts, there were many instances where he consumed significantly more alcohol than others, sometimes having six drinks when everyone else was having one or two. There were nights where he went out drinking without updating me, leaving me feeling anxious and alone.

Recently, our planned staycation was disrupted when he got an OUI after going out with friends. He had promised to call after a couple of drinks, but I didn’t hear from him until the next day when he came home from jail. It’s been a challenging few weeks since then. Jake has begun counseling and acknowledged his drinking problem, vowing to quit for good.

However, I’m torn about what to do. My instincts tell me to leave due to the lack of trust, especially after he lied about drinking and driving. While I want him to get sober for himself and his children, I realize that his recovery must come from within. I fear becoming codependent and controlling his sobriety, and I worry about whether I can support him without losing my own sense of self in the process.

I’ve spoken to a friend who faced similar challenges with her partner. She expressed that staying was the best decision for her, as their relationship grew stronger. Jake has taken commendable steps, including seeing a therapist and disposing of all alcohol in the house. I desperately want to believe in his commitment, but doubt lingers.

It’s incredibly difficult to imagine walking away from someone I love so deeply. People outside of the situation often advise leaving, but when you’re in it, the emotions are overwhelming. I also need to prioritize my own well-being. My heart and mind are in constant conflict over the right course of action, and it’s undeniably painful.
