The delta variant of COVID-19 is sweeping through the United States, with particularly severe impacts in California. Los Angeles is facing a significant challenge, having reported a staggering 40 percent jump in COVID cases over just one day. According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, 2,551 new infections were confirmed on Wednesday, up from 1,821 on Tuesday. This marks an alarming 2,000 percent increase from a mere month prior, when only 124 cases were reported on June 21.

Data reveals that a majority of the new cases—83 percent—are among individuals aged 50 and younger. Notably, of the seven deaths reported in the state, only two were over the age of 65. This trend indicates that the delta variant is particularly affecting younger populations, as it is known to be more transmissible than previous strains. California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that delta variant cases now account for 60 percent of tested samples statewide.

In LA, the positivity rate climbed to 5.2 percent on Wednesday, an increase from 4.8 percent the previous day. This figure serves as a key indicator of community transmission, remaining stable regardless of the number of tests conducted. Furthermore, hospitalizations have risen sharply, with 585 individuals hospitalized due to COVID-19 in LA County—up from just 213 on June 21. Given that hospitalizations and fatalities often lag behind case surges, the region may soon see increased pressure on healthcare services.

In response to the spike in cases, LA’s Health Officer has mandated that masks be worn in all indoor public spaces. Although Governor Newsom has not reinstated a statewide mask mandate, nearly half of California’s counties have issued indoor masking recommendations. Recent updates include mask requirements in counties such as Santa Barbara and Monterey.
