Caution: The following videos are extremely lifelike.
If you’re interested in seeing healthcare professionals demonstrate childbirth with incredibly realistic mannequins, check out some TikTok videos before the weekend! The realism is so striking that you might find yourself holding your breath, squirming, and making faces reminiscent of your own birthing experiences.
There’s a variety of videos available, featuring everything from vaginal births to breech deliveries, stitching up after tears during childbirth, and even removing the placenta. These clips have garnered millions of views, and once you watch one, it’s clear why.
Dr. Sarah Mitchell, a board-certified OB-GYN in Portland, has shared numerous TikTok videos, including one showcasing how a breech baby is delivered using a life-like dummy. This particular video has amassed 28 million views. “They reveal what seems like a secretive and mysterious process—and this is largely because most people haven’t been educated about childbirth,” she shared with Newsweek. “In the United States, abstinence-only sex education dominates, leaving many young people unaware of how their bodies function, especially regarding childbirth.”
Emily Carter, a labor and delivery nurse in Virginia who also posts birthing videos, mentioned to BuzzFeed, “TikTok is primarily aimed at the younger generation, so it makes sense that videos featuring childbirth dolls go viral; many have never been exposed to or seen anything like it. Childbirth is fascinating and beautiful; while each experience is unique, it remains a natural process we all share.”
While watching these simulations is captivating, they lack some of the realities of actual deliveries—like the blood, sounds, and of course, the newborn baby. “If viewers are unsettled by this pristine, smooth delivery with our mannequin, they might want to reconsider being in a real delivery room when things get intense!” Carter noted.
Most who are preparing for childbirth typically attend a birthing class, but these simulated births weren’t part of the curriculum in mine, which concentrated on breathing techniques and positioning. However, it would have been enlightening to see what’s actually happening during the process.
