If you thought Nicole Kidman’s portrayal in The Undoing was exceptional, you’ll definitely want to check out the latest trailer for her upcoming series, Nine Perfect Strangers. Kidman stars as Masha Dmitrichenko, the founder of Tranquillum House—a character that seems to be a bizarre fusion of Gwyneth Paltrow and the devil himself, now running a wellness retreat.

Adapted from the novel by Liane Moriarty, the Hulu mini-series is set in a “boutique health-and-wellness resort” nestled in the Australian countryside. It begins with a serene atmosphere but quickly morphs into something more sinister as guests are instructed to dig their own graves and lie within them.

“Welcome to Tranquillum House,” Kidman intones in an unsettling accent in the trailer. “You came here to heal. This is going to be a wonderful journey. Sometimes it’ll be unpleasant. There’s nothing to fear. You’re mine now… and you want to be mine.”

The group of guests seeking transformative experiences includes a romance novelist named Frances (played by Melissa McCarthy), affluent couple Ben (Melvin Gregg) and Jessica (Samara Weaving), the Marconi family (schoolteacher Napoleon portrayed by Michael Shannon, his wife Heather, and daughter Zoe), lonely divorce lawyer Lars (Luke Evans), retired athlete Tony (Bobby Canavale), and a recently divorced mother (Regina Hall).

As viewers delve deeper into their backstories and motivations for visiting Tranquillum House, they witness Kidman manipulating the narrative through various activities such as meditation, yoga, and an excessive dose of LSD. The guests are also encouraged to give up caffeine, sugar, and technology—ingredients that seem more likely to lead to chaos than healing.

The series, which premieres on August 18, is directed by David E. Kelley of Big Little Lies fame and is produced by Kidman herself. “Although we knew what the concept was, [Nine Perfect Strangers] was acquired more or less sight unseen,” said Kidman’s producing partner in an interview. “Liane was discussing character ideas with Nicole, and she instantly embraced it, leading to the creation of this extraordinary character.”

As the trailer concludes, Kidman ominously reassures the guests, “There’s nothing to fear,” even as sirens blare in the background and the guests begin to unravel. Regardless of the suspenseful twists ahead, Hulu has made it easy to dive into the story, releasing the first three episodes on its premiere date.
