In response to the rise in COVID-19 Delta variant cases, Broadway has announced new health protocols for audiences attending performances in New York City. Effective immediately, attendees must wear masks and present proof of vaccination against COVID-19 to enter any of the city’s 41 theaters. This requirement also extends to performers, backstage personnel, and theater staff.
As outlined in a press release from the Broadway League, guests must be fully vaccinated with a vaccine authorized by the FDA or WHO. This means that for attendees to be considered “fully vaccinated,” the date of the performance must be at least 14 days after receiving the second dose of a two-dose vaccine or 14 days after a single-dose vaccine.
Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, expressed her approval of the new measures, stating, “It is important that we take collective steps to ensure the safety of our audiences.” The uniform policy aims to simplify the experience for guests and bolster confidence in the safety measures being taken.
While the policy is set to last through October, theater owners plan to review it in September, potentially adjusting it for future performances based on scientific guidance. Bonnie Comley, president of The Drama League, emphasized the collaborative effort among various unions to implement these changes, highlighting the community’s commitment to safety.
There are exceptions to this mandate: children under 12 and individuals with medical conditions or religious beliefs preventing vaccination are exempt. However, these individuals must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of the show or a negative antigen test taken within six hours before the performance.
Nick Scandalios from The Nederlander Organization reassured the public that safety remains a priority as Broadway prepares for its return. “With high vaccination rates among NYC audiences, we are dedicated to maintaining the highest public health standards,” he stated.
