Remember that charming Schitt’s Creek toy set that captured hearts online? Its creator has now secured a Netflix deal!
Recently, a Canadian father named Mark Johnson went viral for his delightful Schitt’s Creek play set crafted from his son’s toys, turning his creative lockdown project into an international sensation. Thanks to this newfound fame, Mark is moving his talents to Netflix, and he couldn’t be more astonished.
A wedding DJ and karaoke host from Victoria, Mark found himself with ample free time when the COVID-19 pandemic began. He dedicated five months to meticulously constructing a replica of Schitt’s Creek using a mix of his vintage toys and those belonging to his two-year-old son, Leo.
Mark’s impressive work caught the attention of many social media users, including actors Annie Murphy and Dan Levy, as well as production staff at Netflix. He shared with Today that a “super exciting” phone call came when “someone at Netflix saw my artwork. They loved my Instagram and expressed interest in having me create similar toy art for their original content. It elevated my excitement to a whole new level!”
Until now, Mark had never been compensated for his creative endeavors; however, building the replica served as an excellent outlet for pandemic stress and inspired his son to pursue his passions. “I just did fun projects to bring joy to others. To have Netflix reach out and see people from all over the world engaging with my Instagram really lifted my spirits,” he said. “I simply followed my love for creating things that make people laugh and sharing that joy with my son.”
The entire experience has reaffirmed Mark’s belief in the importance of pursuing what you love. “Even if you don’t land amazing opportunities, at least you’ve spent your life doing what you truly enjoy,” he remarked.
The fact that this journey began with his affection for Schitt’s Creek—a show depicting a father gifting his son a town—makes it a fitting narrative for Mark. “Johnny Rose gives Schitt’s Creek to his son, which ultimately leads to joy and opportunity for their family,” he explained. “Similarly, by giving my son a piece of Schitt’s Creek, it has brought joy and exciting opportunities for us. It’s a wonderful parallel.”
