In response to the surge in Delta variant COVID-19 cases, a new mandate has been announced for audiences attending performances in New York City’s Broadway theaters. Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, expressed support for the uniform policy, stating, “By implementing these safety measures across all Broadway venues, we are simplifying the process for our audiences and reinforcing our commitment to their safety.” The mandate is expected to remain in place through October, with plans for a review in September to assess any potential adjustments for November performances and beyond.
Bonnie Comley, president of The Drama League’s board, noted, “This is a collaborative decision from the Broadway community, and we will re-evaluate in October. It’s a positive step, showcasing unity among various unions.”
There are exceptions to this mandate. Children under the age of 12 and individuals with specific medical or religious exemptions will be allowed entry but must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of the performance or a negative antigen test taken within six hours before the show.
