In a troubling incident aboard a flight from Philadelphia to Miami, flight attendants from Frontier Airlines, aided by other passengers, were forced to secure an unruly passenger to his seat using duct tape. This event has triggered an investigation by the airline.
The passenger, identified by local authorities as Jordan Smith, reportedly consumed several alcoholic beverages and became disruptive, wandering the cabin without a shirt and allegedly assaulting two female crew members. Eyewitness accounts describe Smith yelling profanities and making aggressive gestures, prompting a male flight attendant to intervene. Video footage captured the chaotic scene, including Smith attempting to strike the attendant before being restrained with tape.
Upon arrival in Miami, Smith was taken into custody and faces multiple battery charges. Following the incident, he expressed feelings of humiliation, claiming he was laughed at during the ordeal.
Frontier Airlines has placed the involved flight attendants on paid leave while they review the situation. The airline stated that this decision was made to ensure compliance with proper protocols for handling such incidents. In response to pushback from the flight attendants’ union, Frontier emphasized their commitment to supporting the crew members affected and pledged cooperation with law enforcement regarding the prosecution of the passenger.
Sara Nelson, the president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, criticized the airline’s swift decision to suspend the crew, arguing that management should support the frontline workers tasked with maintaining safety onboard. She highlighted the need for more stringent consequences for disruptive passengers, citing a survey that revealed rampant verbal abuse and aggression faced by flight attendants in recent times.
