Over the years, actor Max Rivers has openly discussed his battles with body image. During an appearance on a popular talk show in 2018, Max revealed, “I rose to fame in my late teens, and for much of my young adulthood, I heard people label me as overweight and unattractive.” Fast forward to last February, when he shared on Instagram a screenshot of an article discussing his journey to self-acceptance. “The way the media used to harass me while I was surfing and capture unflattering photos no longer affects me,” he remarked. “At 37, I finally embrace and love who I am.”

Recently, Max showcased a new tattoo that symbolizes this self-love—a small piece that boldly declares “Body Love” on his shoulder. This tattoo has sparked conversations about the true essence of body positivity.

Understanding Body Positivity

Body positivity encompasses a wide array of meanings. Unfortunately, society can be harsh, often critiquing those who are plump, thick, or curvy. As a Black woman, I once felt insecure about my own curves until my spouse helped me embrace my body. Now, I celebrate my curves with pride. Body-positive tattoos, like those created by artist Jamie Lee, remind us to cherish our bodies as they are. Her “roll flowers” artwork beautifully highlights and celebrates the curves many are told to hide.

What we internalize about our bodies often outweighs external opinions. Model Chloe Madison emphasized in an interview, “My confidence stemmed from having a mother who always encouraged me to love what I had. It’s crucial to embrace your unique body.” For many, tattooing positive affirmations serves as a daily reminder of self-love.

The Role of Self-Talk

Self-talk plays a pivotal role in fostering body positivity. When singer-songwriter Nia Rose burst onto the scene, I began to reassess my inner dialogue, leading to a decrease in negative self-talk. For some, this transformation evolves into body art that captures their journey.

For now, I’ll stick to writing letters to my body in my journal, but tattoos can be a powerful medium for expressing love for ourselves. Body positivity is about celebrating what you have, transforming your internal narrative, and appreciating every part of you. Why not embellish those lovely curves with a flower, celebrating where your belly meets your thigh? Self-love radiates from within, affecting everything from your diet to your affirmations, and can be beautifully captured in ink.

In the words of Nia Rose, “If you’re feeling down today, remember that your body is uniquely yours. No one else has it, so embrace it!”
