In a heartwarming gesture, wrestler Tatyana Johnson is giving back to her mother after making history in Tokyo. Winning gold not only marked her achievement as the first Black American woman to do so in her sport, but it also ignited a mission to fulfill her mother’s long-held dream.
Tatyana shared with People magazine her plan to use a significant portion of her $37,500 prize money to purchase a food truck for her mother. “She has worked so hard and I’ve seen her struggle ever since my father passed away. It’s been tough for her,” Tatyana explained. Her father tragically died in a car accident while returning from one of her wrestling matches, leaving her mother, Mia Johnson, to single-handedly raise her.
“I promised her five years ago that I would help her get a food truck, and now I can make that a reality,” Tatyana said during her press conference after winning gold. “She’s a fantastic cook, especially with barbecue, and now she can finally have her own cooking business!”
Previously, her mom had been using a small portable grill to sell sandwiches, a setup that wasn’t the best legal approach, Tatyana admitted. But with the new food truck, they’ve even chosen a name for the venture: The Lady Bug!
Tatyana has often praised her mother as her greatest supporter. “She is the strongest person I know. I’m so grateful for her presence in my life through thick and thin,” she shared in a heartfelt Mother’s Day post.
Despite their close relationship, Tatyana admits she might not be the truck’s biggest customer since she has transitioned to a pescatarian diet. Regardless, she’s excited to cheer on her mother in this new endeavor.
