A Crisis Taught Me to Embrace Life’s Joys Now

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been someone who saved the best for last. As a child, I collected erasers and would only use my less favored ones at school. This pattern continued into adulthood—my favorite outfits and cherished books were always reserved for a “special occasion” that never seemed to arrive. Then I faced a life-altering challenge: cancer. It hit me hard that the “someday” I was waiting for might never come. Why was I holding back? The moment to cherish life is now.

Recently, while choosing an outfit for my radiation treatment, I realized I had been saving my favorite clothes for a special moment that never came. Days blurred into weeks, and I found myself surrounded by clothing I loved but never wore. I questioned my choices; why wait for a specific occasion to wear what makes me happy?

During countless hours in medical offices, I often donned ill-fitting gowns, feeling stripped of choice. I underwent numerous procedures while grappling with the reality of my illness. Yet, on the rare days when I had a choice, I yearned to wear what uplifted my spirit. I had suffered losses—my hair, my health, and parts of my body. Why would I continue to deny myself the simple pleasure of wearing my favorite things?

Life is precious and fleeting. If I waited for everything to be perfect to enjoy my favorite experiences, I might miss out entirely. I realized that waiting for the right moment to find joy is not a way to live. Instead, we need to actively create the life we desire.

Every week, as I sat in my chemotherapy chair, I shared space with fellow patients, each navigating their own battles with illness. We were all there together, confronting the reality that tomorrow is never guaranteed. I witnessed the fragility of life firsthand, reinforcing the importance of living fully in the present.

So what brings you joy?

What are your passions? What colors make you feel alive? Too often, we neglect the things that make us who we are, thinking we can enjoy them another time. I don’t mean to cast a shadow over our existence; rather, I want to encourage awareness of our own lives’ fragility. The time for joy is not sometime in the future—it’s right now.
