As COVID-19 cases among children rise with the start of the school year, Dallas County Judge Mark Thompson has issued a stark warning regarding the state of local hospitals. During a press conference, he stated, “If your child requires an ICU bed, they may be forced to wait for another child to pass away.” This alarming statement underscores the severe strain on healthcare facilities as they grapple with an influx of cases.
Judge Thompson, along with other officials, is challenging Governor Lisa Martinez’s recent executive order that prohibits local governments from enforcing mask mandates. He emphasized the dangers of not wearing masks or getting vaccinated, stressing that vaccines have proven effective in saving lives. Many individuals who previously avoided vaccination and later contracted the virus have since urged others to get vaccinated before it’s too late.
“In Dallas, we currently have no ICU beds available for children,” Thompson explained. “This means that if your child is involved in an accident or has a serious medical condition, or more likely, if they contract COVID and require intensive care, we simply do not have the capacity. Your child will have to wait for another child to die.” This shortage extends beyond Dallas, affecting 19 surrounding counties as well, putting every child’s health at risk.
Thompson further elaborated, “If your child needs urgent medical attention, they might have to be transported to facilities in Temple or even Oklahoma City to find a bed.” The situation is critical, with over half of Texas hospitals reporting full ICU capacities for adults as well. As of early August, at least 53 hospitals across the state had no available ICU beds. Approximately 87% of all hospital beds in Texas are occupied, with 14% occupied by patients suffering from severe or life-threatening COVID cases.
Dr. Angela Roberts, head of the Austin-Travis County health department, noted that patients are experiencing longer hospital stays compared to previous surges. “This current wave is the most rapid and aggressive we’ve witnessed. The majority of our hospitalizations involve unvaccinated individuals who are developing severe complications. The patient demographic in ICUs is younger, and they are sicker and requiring more extended care than during prior surges, placing additional pressure on hospital resources.”
