In just the first week of the school year, the Hillsborough School District in Florida has seen a staggering rise in COVID-19 cases, prompting widespread quarantines. With the highly transmissible delta variant causing an alarming spike in infections, the district reported that 1,800 students tested positive and an astounding 10,000 others were placed in quarantine.
As the seventh-largest school district in the U.S., Hillsborough serves over 200,000 students. By midweek, over 10,000 students and 338 staff members were in quarantine. A total of 1,805 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been documented among students and staff. While masks are mandated in schools, parents have the option to opt-out, and over 28,000 have chosen to do so.
An emergency school board meeting held to discuss the situation became contentious as parents voiced their opinions on the necessity of universal masking. “Have any children died?” one parent exclaimed, while others pointed out that COVID-19 has indeed claimed young lives in Florida and elsewhere. A teacher’s wife, whose spouse is immunocompromised, expressed concerns about the disparities in enforcing dress codes versus mask mandates, stating, “This tiny piece of cloth is not taking away your freedom. … Grow up.” The meeting extended nearly three hours and concluded with a vote for an emergency mask mandate, effective for at least 30 days. Parents can still exempt their children but must provide a doctor’s note.
School officials indicated they felt constrained by Governor Ron DeSantis’s ban on mask mandates, navigating the challenge of ensuring safety while adhering to state mandates. “As we work to create the safest environment for our students and staff, we also must abide by the governor’s executive order,” a district spokesperson remarked. Florida is currently experiencing the highest COVID-19 case rates in the nation, with over 55 children hospitalized daily.
