In response to the humanitarian crisis following the Taliban’s takeover in Afghanistan, Airbnb has announced its commitment to provide free temporary housing for 20,000 Afghan refugees worldwide. The initiative aims to offer a safe haven for individuals and families who are fleeing their homeland. “This past week has highlighted the urgent need for support in relocating Afghan refugees both in the United States and across the globe. Our community is ready to rise to this challenge,” stated the company in a recent announcement.

The program is funded by Airbnb, its CEO and co-founder, Jake Collins, as well as contributions to Airbnb.org and the Airbnb.org Refugee Fund. Collins shared on social media, “Starting today, we will begin housing 20,000 Afghan refugees globally for free.” He emphasized that while the company will cover the costs of these stays, the generosity of Airbnb Hosts is crucial for making this initiative possible.

Collins expressed hope that the Airbnb community would not only offer a secure place for these refugees to rest but also extend a warm welcome as they embark on this new chapter of their lives. “For these 20,000 individuals, I hope our community can provide a safe place to rest and start anew,” he noted.

Airbnb.org has also allocated emergency funds to organizations like the International Rescue Committee and Church World Service to facilitate immediate temporary housing for up to 1,000 Afghan refugees arriving in the U.S. Already, the platform has successfully housed 165 refugees in recent days. David Green, president and CEO of the International Rescue Committee, remarked, “As we assist in welcoming Afghan individuals and families to the U.S., accessible housing is not just important, it’s essential. We appreciate the support from Airbnb.org in providing safe and welcoming places.”

This is not Airbnb’s first initiative to assist refugees. Over the last four years, the company has connected around 25,000 refugees to temporary housing, including those involved in the U.S. Special Immigrant Visa Program. Earlier this year, Airbnb.org announced the establishment of a $25 million Refugee Fund to further support refugees and asylum seekers globally.
