As a mother of four, I often find myself reflecting on the unique personalities of each of my children. They are remarkably different—some are introverted while others are more extroverted, some enjoy binge-watching their favorite shows, while others prefer getting lost in a good book. I have my little athletes and those who couldn’t care less about sports. Among these diverse personalities, I do have a favorite child—one who truly stands out.

Now, you may wonder how a mother can choose one child over the others, potentially making them feel more cherished. The truth is, I tell each of my kids that they are my favorite. I share this secret with them individually and ask them to keep it under wraps, as I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. As they grew older and began to suspect that I was telling them all the same thing, I reassured them by saying, “When I tell you, I truly mean it.” And honestly, I do.

Growing up, my own mother used to claim that she had four favorites—her favorite daughter, her favorite left-handed son, her favorite brown-eyed boy, and her favorite little one. I thought it was amusing at the time; how could anyone love four people equally? But now that I’m a parent, I completely understand. I too have my four favorites, each with qualities that make them uniquely special.

My Favorite Girl

Let’s start with my daughter, who is undoubtedly my favorite girl. Not only is she the only girl among her siblings, but her vibrant imagination and nurturing nature truly set her apart. Since her first birthday, she has taken care of her doll as if it were her own child. Watching her care for her “baby” fills my heart with warmth. She embraces her childhood with joy, never rushing to grow up, and I feel blessed to witness her innocence.

My Favorite Intellectual

Next is my favorite intellectual—my eldest son. He is incredibly bright, and I could listen to him talk about any topic for hours. He devours books and is always eager to learn something new, whether it’s facts or hands-on activities like building with LEGO. His curiosity is infectious, and I am so proud of his passion for knowledge.

My Fashionable Son

Then there’s my fashionable son, who wears glasses. The moment I catch sight of his stylish frames, it brings a smile to my face. He has a unique sense of style and confidence that I admire. He embraces his individuality without a care for others’ opinions. Watching him care for his baby sister with patience and love is a joy; he will undoubtedly grow up to be a wonderful partner and parent.

My Sweet Boy, Freckles

Lastly, I have my sweet boy, affectionately called Freckles. His ability to express love is unmatched; he frequently proclaims his affection for our family without hesitation. His emotional openness is a rare trait, especially as he approaches the age when many children begin to shy away from such displays. His tender heart makes him incredibly special.

Each of my children knows they are loved and valued, and I make sure to remind them of that constantly. They are aware of their individual strengths that make them shine, and I hope they carry that knowledge with them as they grow. While there may be days when one child stands out a bit more than the others, they all hold a special place in my heart. Ultimately, they know that my love for them is unwavering.
