The Role of Midwives
When people learn I’m a midwife, the floodgates often open, and they share their birth stories with me. There’s an inherent trust that comes with my profession. However, some still confuse my role with that of a doula or lactation consultant. Others may not realize that Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs), like myself, provide care in hospitals and birth centers, in addition to home births.
My journey began while studying pre-med, where I shadowed an OB. I was initially thrilled but soon felt disheartened as I witnessed the focus on surgeries rather than patient care. It wasn’t until I met a nurse-midwife years later that my perspective shifted. She described a model of care that emphasized personalized attention and one-on-one interactions with patients. This resonated deeply with me, leading me to pursue midwifery.
As a midwife, my role extends beyond facilitating a healthy birth; it encompasses addressing both the medical and emotional aspects of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. We aim to empower women, ensuring they feel positive about their entire experience. Our support continues beyond birth, covering aspects of women’s health throughout their lives, including menopause and routine screenings.
My days vary from clinic visits and prenatal check-ups to attending multiple births during overnight hospital shifts. However, what sets midwifery apart is the meaningful conversations I share with my patients. I dedicate ample time to each visit, discussing their feelings about pregnancy, their support systems, sleep patterns, and any anxieties they may have. This personalized approach helps tailor care to each woman’s unique circumstances.
