Sometimes, a moment can leave you utterly breathless. You anticipate it, yet when it finally arrives, it elevates your emotions to a level you never expected. That’s exactly how I felt recently while watching my little sister, the youngest of four girls and six siblings.
She’s the kind of person you want in your corner, whether you’re about to enter a bar fight or welcome a new life into the world. With a loud voice and an even bigger heart, she is refreshingly honest and will confront anyone who threatens those she loves. If you’ve seen the meme that says “there’s always one” among a group of women, you guessed it — that’s her!
No one’s life is perfect, and ours is no exception. Both of us became single moms before we even hit our twenties. I remember my struggles with one child, and I’ve witnessed her challenges with two. While my situation changed after my firstborn, the memories of that time remain vivid. It’s incredibly tough, and there’s not a single person who has experienced it who would argue otherwise. But this isn’t a tale of sympathy; it’s a story of resilience.
Over a decade ago, I married into the military and moved 500 miles away from home. About five years ago, my little sister bravely followed suit — but she did it on her own.
Her motivations were different from mine; I moved for love, while she moved for survival. Leaving behind everything she knew and everyone she loved, she took only her sons with her. Now, she was closer to me, starting anew for their sake! Aware that her boys were growing up quickly, she realized it was now or never. This leap of faith required her to close her eyes and jump into the unknown, knowing that her previous life was not providing the opportunities they deserved.
My sister faced numerous challenges: societal pressures, unpredictable circumstances, and broken systems. She tackled everything head-on, often with pain and tears. Like many single mothers, she has support, yet she stands solo in her journey. This incredible woman has raised two fantastic boys all on her own, constantly prioritizing their needs and dreams above her own.
But today was different; she got to celebrate an achievement of her own. She sent her firstborn off to college — not just because of his impressive grades (which matter greatly), but also because he is chasing his dream of playing Division 1 football. The hug she gave him was filled with an emotion beyond words. I’m not sure what she whispered to him or what thoughts raced through her mind, but in that moment, I felt immense pride for her. I could see her tears of pride, the kind that most mothers experience during such significant milestones. But what stood out was the relief in her tears. Being a single mom of Black sons in today’s world is anything but easy.
Watching my little sister embrace her son, then seeing her tears of relief as they both stepped into a new chapter of life — this was one of the most magical moments I’ve ever witnessed.
