A New Romance Novel Features a Plus-Size Cinderella, and We’re Absolutely Thrilled

I first discovered author Jamie Rivers through the film adaptation of her novel, “Chubby Belle.” The buzz surrounding it was too intriguing to ignore. As a plus-size woman, any narrative featuring a leading character like me instantly captures my attention. As someone from the South, I couldn’t resist a story that pays homage to country music icons. Although “Chubby Belle” targets a younger demographic—being a YA story and I’m in my thirties—if someone told me they crafted the perfect tale I’ve always wanted to see, it would be that one.

When I finally watched it, I was completely captivated. We even adopted a puppy around the same time, and I named her Belle Cloyd. The story resonated deeply with me.

After diving into Jamie Rivers’ world through Netflix, I quickly learned she has penned numerous other works, including two companion novels, “Sweet Pea” and “Pumpkin Spice.” Most of her stories center around plus-size protagonists, and it’s refreshing to see characters that reflect my own experiences.

One of Jamie Rivers’ latest endeavors is titled “If the Slipper Fits.” This marks her debut novel aimed at adults. It’s a contemporary twist on the classic Cinderella tale, featuring a plus-size heroine named Cindy. In this charming retelling, Cindy is a budding shoe designer and the only plus-size contestant on a reality dating show. Commissioned by Disney, I was beyond excited to read this book. (I consumed it within two days and genuinely felt a pang of sadness when it ended, wishing to accompany Cindy on her journey forever.)

I had the opportunity to chat with Jamie Rivers about “If the Slipper Fits,” the importance of representing plus-size women in literature, and her insights on plus-size fashion.

Jamie was chosen by Disney to reinvent one of their beloved princesses for a contemporary audience, and as a plus-size woman, I couldn’t be happier. Jamie recounts how when her editor informed her about the Disney rom-com series inspired by classic princess stories, she immediately knew Cinderella would be her choice.

“I’ve always dreamed of writing an adult novel, and this project felt like the perfect transition from YA to adults,” Jamie shares. “Cinderella was my first Disney princess, and I have vivid memories of watching her story unfold. I remember using my mom’s bra straps as a makeshift choker, pretending to be her.”

Before even selecting the princess, Jamie was determined to make her plus-size. “All my stories celebrate plus-size characters. Since the average American woman is over a size 14, it makes sense to have a modern Disney princess mirror today’s woman,” she explains.

Cinderella was my first Disney princess too! Her story resonated with me as a chubby kid in the nineties, when plus-size role models were scarce. If a prince could love a maid, perhaps my prince was out there waiting for me too.

Cindy’s honest conversation about her body felt like a genuine reflection of a plus-size person’s experiences. Jamie’s writing resonates with those of us who have struggled with body image and embraces the fat positivity movement that is so crucial for many real-life plus-size women.

“It took me ages to truly love myself and accept my place as the main character. Now that I’ve realized that, I want to see more representation. Let’s make all the characters plus-size!” Jamie laughs. “The world needs to see diverse stories featuring plus-size women, and I’m thrilled to contribute to that.”

Jamie acknowledges that while “If the Slipper Fits” is not the only story with a plus-size protagonist, there’s always room for more diverse, successful characters in literature.

“Plus-size representation in romance is growing, with authors like Talia Hibbert and Olivia Dade paving the way. But we still have a long way to go,” she admits, noting that often, lists of fat-positive fiction feature the same few titles and authors.

The concept of a plus-size contestant on a reality dating show may seem daunting, but Jamie knew this setting would be a fitting backdrop for her retelling of Cinderella.

“I thought a reality dating show would serve as a modern interpretation of the ball and the midnight clock motif,” Jamie explains. “Even if plus-size contestants aren’t often featured, I could easily imagine the challenges they might face, drawing from personal experiences as a plus-size creator myself.”

Cindy’s passion for shoes and design is rooted in the often-limited fashion options available for plus-size women. Jamie can relate to this struggle deeply.

Having been accepted into the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Jamie’s dreams were put on hold due to financial issues. Her love for fashion started in the mall, where she often found nothing that fit her style or size.

“Growing up, I frequented stores like Hollister and American Eagle, but they never catered to my size. I remember the pain of shopping for clothes that were not only stylish but also fit well,” she recalls.

For Cindy, shoes are her passion; for Jamie, it’s accessories. “I have a collection of headbands that I adore. That’s my version of Cindy’s shoes,” she admits.

For me, it was makeup. I channeled my energy into enhancing my face, dedicating time to perfecting my look. Now, I feel comfortable in my skin, but I still love that transformative ritual before a big day.

Both Cindy and Jamie showcase a keen sense of style and confidence. Jamie is often spotted in trendy outfits and even shares her fashion finds on Instagram.

“I have a pretty extensive wardrobe and love brands like Universal Standard and Superfit Hero,” Jamie shares. “Fashion is essential; it’s how we express ourselves. I remember struggling to find clothes that fit when preparing for interviews. It’s crucial to have access to clothing that empowers us.”

Jamie concluded our conversation with an exciting teaser: “I can’t reveal who will be writing the next princess stories, but I promise you’ll be thrilled.”

“If the Slipper Fits” is now available wherever books are sold, and fans can look forward to more titles in Disney’s Meant to Be Series from other talented authors soon.
