A Working Mom’s Morning Routine

Being a new mom has taught me that mornings can be a whirlwind of chaos. If I thought getting to work was tough before my little one arrived, it’s a whole new ballgame now. My natural inclination to organize everything down to the smallest detail means I had to rethink our morning routine. Here are some updated “rules” I’ve adopted to keep our mornings manageable and maintain my sanity—something all parents can agree is crucial!

Minimize Time-Consuming Tasks

It might sound a bit extreme, but I’ve worked to cut out anything that eats up time in the morning. For instance, I take my shower at night. My clothes and lunch are prepped and ready to go before I hit the hay. Most tasks can be tackled the night before, which makes the morning smoother. I also prepare my son’s cloth diapers and pack his bag for the babysitter in advance.

Utilize List-Making

Creating a list of essentials has become my best friend in the morning rush. With a 45-hour work week, caring for an infant, and managing my blog, it’s easy to forget things at 5 a.m. I write down everything I need daily, keep it in the kitchen, or even in the diaper bag itself, which simplifies the packing process.

Keep Reminders in Obvious Spots

Some tasks can’t be done ahead of time, like packing pumped milk, pump parts, and my lunch. To ensure I don’t forget these important items, I stick notes on the bags that need them. In the morning, a quick glance at these reminders helps me gather everything we need. I also place a note by the door to remind me of the essentials: baby’s milk, breast pump, my laptop, phone, and diapers.

Prepare for the Unexpected

It may seem obvious, but the unpredictable can always throw a wrench in your plans. For us, it might be a missed alarm, an urgent feeding session, or a stained outfit. I’m still working on waking up early enough to account for these surprises! Whether you’re a working mom or a stay-at-home parent, viewing your morning routine as a challenge can make all the difference. If today doesn’t go as planned, there’s always tomorrow to improve!
