Tropical Storm Ida has unleashed historic rainfall upon the Northeast, leading to tragic flooding in New York City and New Jersey. As of today, at least eight individuals have lost their lives in New York City, prompting the National Weather Service to issue its first-ever flash flood warning for the area. Tornadoes were also reported in both New York and New Jersey, a highly unusual occurrence.

Ida made landfall in the region late Wednesday night, resulting in widespread power outages and flooding of streets, homes, and public transit systems. The level of destruction is beyond description, and many residents are sharing alarming videos on social media.

Among the deceased are a family consisting of a 50-year-old man, a 48-year-old woman, and their 2-year-old son, all discovered in their flooded home in Flushing. Additionally, a 66-year-old man was found in the basement of his Brooklyn apartment, while a 22-year-old and his 45-year-old mother were located deceased in their home’s basement in Queens. An 86-year-old woman was found in her basement apartment in Queens, and a 70-year-old man in New Jersey was swept away by floodwaters while in his vehicle.

A tornado warning was issued for the Bronx, with footage from a local meteorologist showing a tornado touching down in New Jersey. In response to the emergency, New York City enforced a travel ban for all non-essential vehicles overnight. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority also halted all services, although some lines resumed limited operations this morning.

New York City Mayor Michael Johnson declared a state of emergency shortly before midnight, stating, “We are experiencing a historic weather event tonight, with record rainfall, severe flooding, and perilous road conditions.” Governor Sarah Miller also declared a state of emergency for New York State, while Governor Tom Richards did the same for New Jersey. Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings, first for New Jersey and then for New York City, marking the first instance of such warnings in the region.

On Thursday morning, Johnson tweeted a message honoring the lives lost during the storm, saying, “Our hearts go out to those lost in last night’s storm. Please keep them and their loved ones in your thoughts today. They were our fellow New Yorkers, and to their families, your city will support you in the coming days.”
