If there’s one thing that drives me crazy, it’s the arbitrary fashion rules people cling to. Honestly, the only guideline you should follow when it comes to style is to wear what you love and what makes you feel fantastic.
I used to come across ridiculous advice in fashion publications, such as not wearing white after Labor Day (seriously, winter whites are stunning) and the absurd notion that you shouldn’t sport a miniskirt past the age of 35 (do legs really have an expiration date?). I’ve also heard that shorts are forbidden at the office and that mixing metals in jewelry is a fashion faux pas. Plus, I’m completely over the expectation that my bra must match my outfit invisibly. We all know most women, or anyone with breasts, wear bras, so why the fuss if one peeks out?
It’s 2021, and it’s time to recognize that those rules are not just outdated; they’re downright silly.
No one should dictate what others can or cannot wear.
One trend that’s making a major comeback is the miniskirt. Personally, I’ve always believed miniskirts are timeless (and yes, my 46-year-old self wears them just like I did at twelve, thank you very much). They’re making a resurgence now, and I’m here for it.
Miniskirts have a long history, first appearing in the ’60s, with the ‘80s bringing vibrant neon and leather styles. Then in the ‘90s, plaid and pleated minis ruled the scene. They are not only fun to wear but also versatile—perfect for dressing up or down. A miniskirt can elevate your favorite concert tee and provide a nice breeze on warmer days.
I recently added a sweatshirt fabric miniskirt to my wardrobe, and it’s more comfortable than any pair of shorts I own (no wedgie issues, yay!). I also love the look of a flirty mini styled with a blazer or an oversized cardigan.
The possibilities with miniskirts are endless, which is why I’m thrilled they’re trending in 2021. According to Heuritch, a leading analytics platform for fashion brands, miniskirt sales are projected to increase, with an expected rise of +8% among women in the US and +10% in Europe this fall.
And just so you know, miniskirts are for every body type—don’t think for a second that you’re too old, or that you don’t have the right body for it. If you have a body and want to wear a miniskirt, go for it!
While this trend has gained popularity among Gen-Z, that doesn’t mean they are the only ones allowed to wear them. Miniskirts can look fabulous on people of all ages and sizes, so embrace it if you feel inspired.
I’m currently obsessed with a cute flirty mini on @sarahjane, and I love how @miriamstyle has styled hers for a seamless transition from summer to fall. This button-up miniskirt on @jennvercammen is hot and perfect for showcasing your new boots. Pairing a mini with tights like @anastasiakrik and @fashionheights did adds a vibrant touch.
So, if you’re feeling the urge to grab a mini (or two) for work, errands, or just lounging at home, don’t hold back. Wear that miniskirt if you want to.
