If there’s one thing that irks me, it’s the fashion rules that seem to dictate what we should and shouldn’t wear. Honestly, the only guideline worth following is to wear what you love and what makes you feel fantastic.
I used to roll my eyes at ridiculous fashion advice about not wearing white after Labor Day (seriously, winter white is stunning) and the absurd notion that miniskirts are off-limits after a certain age (do legs really expire?). I’ve heard that shorts are unprofessional and that mixing metals in jewelry is a no-go. And let’s not even get started on the bra-matching fiasco. Most women, or anyone with breasts, wear bras, so what’s the fuss if one peeks through?
Well, it’s 2021, and we can all agree those rules are outdated and frankly, silly. Who are you to dictate what others should wear?
One trend that’s making a triumphant return is the miniskirt. Although I believe they’ve always been in style (my 46-year-old self wears them just like I did at twelve, thank you very much), they’re having a big moment now.
The miniskirt first burst onto the scene in the ’60s and saw a resurgence in the ‘80s with neon and leather styles everywhere. By the ’90s, plaid and pleated minis were all the rage. They’re one of the most enjoyable pieces to have in your wardrobe—versatile, comfortable, and an effortless way to elevate a casual concert tee while keeping things breezy.
I recently snagged a miniskirt made of sweatshirt material, and let me tell you, it’s comfier than any shorts I own (who doesn’t love avoiding wedgies?). I’m also loving the look of a miniskirt paired with a blazer or oversized cardigan.
The possibilities with these darling little skirts are endless, which is why I’m thrilled to see them trending in 2021. According to Heuritch, a leading analytics platform for fashion brands, miniskirt sales are on the rise, with a forecast increase of +8% among women in the US and +10% in Europe this fall.
And just to clarify, miniskirts are for every body type—so don’t for a second believe you’re too old or not shaped right to wear one. Here’s the newsflash: If you have a body and feel like rocking a miniskirt, go for it!
While this trend may be highlighted by Gen-Z influencers, it’s definitely not restricted to them. These fun skirts look fabulous on individuals of all ages and sizes, so embrace it if you wish.
I’m loving this playful mini on @amandawhite, and @johndoe‘s outfit is a perfect way to transition from summer to fall. You can also pair your mini with tights for a splash of color like @jane_doe did.
So, if you’re itching to grab a mini (or two) and wear one to work, while running errands, or just lounging at home, don’t let anything hold you back. Wear that miniskirt if it makes you happy!
