A Word on Vaccines
These days, the mere mention of “vaccine” can trigger strong reactions. But don’t worry, I’m not diving into the topic of COVID vaccines. Instead, let’s talk about the importance of the flu shot this year.
Many people skip the flu vaccine for various reasons unrelated to anti-vaccine sentiments or conspiracy theories. Recently, I checked my state’s vaccine database to download my COVID vaccine record and noticed my flu shot history. I was surprised to find that I hadn’t been consistent with my flu vaccinations over the years. For a long time, I simply didn’t prioritize it due to time constraints and lack of motivation.
This year, however, it’s crucial not to overlook getting your flu shot. Make a plan! Jot it down on your calendar, set multiple reminders, and follow through. And don’t forget to get your COVID vaccine if you haven’t already.
The Current Situation
If you’ve been paying attention, you know that the health landscape is concerning right now. COVID-19 cases are surging, especially among the unvaccinated, and public health officials warn that this winter could be even tougher as the flu season approaches. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) typically recommends getting the flu shot by the end of October, but this year they are urging everyone to get vaccinated as early as possible.
Dr. Samira Patel, an expert in infectious diseases, explains, “In the past, we advised waiting to get vaccinated, but this year, getting your flu shot sooner rather than later is wise.”
In a typical flu season, the CDC reports between 9 to 45 million flu cases in the U.S. Last year, thanks to social distancing and mask mandates, flu cases were nearly nonexistent. However, with many states lifting restrictions, schools reopening, and life returning to normal, we can expect a rise in flu cases this year. Our already strained healthcare systems may struggle to cope with an influx of patients.
Moreover, there’s a potential bonus: getting the flu shot may reduce your risk of severe COVID-19 symptoms.
A Final Note
I know that discussing vaccines can be overwhelming, and you might prefer lighter topics. But the importance of the flu shot cannot be overstated. Make sure to include your children, too, and get vaccinated against COVID if you haven’t done so yet.
