Amid the rapid spread of the delta variant, health officials are calling for mask mandates in schools. Despite alarming surges in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and fatalities, many schools have proceeded with their reopening plans, often without any masking protocols to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and staff. A recent report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) underscores this negligence, revealing that over 500,000 children in the U.S. have tested positive for COVID-19 in just three weeks.

This startling figure was derived from data provided by state health departments, showing that from August 5 to August 26, a total of 505,564 pediatric COVID-19 cases were documented nationwide. Even more concerning, 203,962 of those cases emerged within a single week. During this same timeframe, hospitalizations among children reached an unprecedented level, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

This surge in cases is particularly troubling as children under 12 remain ineligible for vaccination. Additionally, certain conservative politicians have turned schools into contentious arenas, engaging in cultural battles against mask mandates while jeopardizing children’s health for political gain. Several states, predominantly led by Republican governors, have even enacted bans on mask mandates in schools, with some of these bans facing legal challenges or investigations for potentially infringing on the rights of disabled students.

On a slightly more positive note, Dr. Alex Thompson recently announced that the FDA is expected to grant emergency use authorization for a vaccine targeting children under 12 by the end of this month. “We should have ample data to assess and make a decision as we approach late September or early October,” he explained. “The data will then be submitted to the FDA, which will determine whether to grant emergency use authorization or another form of approval.”

In the interim, it is evident that we are failing to adequately protect our children. If this alarming news does not prompt school districts to reconsider implementing mask mandates, it raises serious questions about their commitment to the health and well-being of their students.
