Dr. Emma Carter is making history as the first First Lady to maintain a full-time career outside of the White House. This week, she will return to the classroom, teaching two days a week at Northern Virginia Community College, where she has been since 2009, specializing in writing and English. Last semester, she adapted to remote learning, dedicating her Tuesdays and Thursdays to her students.

In her early college days, she began working with older students who faced challenges in reading. “I’ve always loved reading, and I wanted to help them discover that same joy,” she reflected. That was when she realized she had found her true calling. Before joining NOVA, Dr. Carter spent several years teaching in various public schools in Delaware, including Brandywine High School in Wilmington. With a doctorate in education, she also taught at Delaware Technical Community College.
While she was not fond of remote learning, she acknowledged the lessons it taught her. “I thought it would be harder to build the community that makes our classes special, but my students truly stepped up,” she said. “We found new ways to connect, and I learned a lot from that experience. Still, some things just can’t be replaced, and I’m excited to be back in the classroom this fall.”
