However, California continues to see an increase in pediatric COVID cases, which underpins the urgency for this vaccine requirement.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, over 5 million children have contracted COVID-19, with the delta variant proving to be particularly infectious among younger populations. During the week of August 26 to September 2, children represented over 26 percent of all COVID cases in the United States. Although severe illness from the virus remains rare in children, COVID has significantly disrupted education, with sick children, teachers, and those who must quarantine due to exposure all impacting classroom attendance.
“Our priority is to ensure the safety of students and teachers while keeping them in the classroom,” said Board Vice President Thomas Reed. “A medical and scientific consensus has confirmed that vaccinating all eligible individuals is the best approach to protect our schools and communities. This policy aims to achieve that goal.”
