In the realm of parenting, things have been relatively uneventful lately, leading to a lack of engaging material for my blog. Instead of utilizing my children as sources for humorous anecdotes, I’ve chosen to reflect on my own parenting blunders. Some of these missteps required considerable recollection, as they span several years, and I suspect I’ve lost a few IQ points with each child. Additionally, I have indulged in a fair amount of wine which has rendered some memories a bit foggy.

So, let’s dive in! Here are my top parenting blunders:

1. The Circle of Doom with My Baby Daughter

It was a chilly winter afternoon in 2002 at my in-laws’ home, where my daughter, Lily, who was just over a year old, was eager to try the new toddler swing hanging from a beautiful oak tree. My father-in-law had secured the swing with long ropes, allowing it to be at just the right height. We were happily swinging back and forth when I had a rather ill-advised notion to push the swing in a circular motion, reminiscent of a tire swing. To my astonishment, the swing toppled over, leaving Lily dangling and howling in terror. My first instinct was to yell for my husband, “Catch her, catch her!” as I frantically chased the swing’s erratic path. Thankfully, my husband and father-in-law acted wisely and caught her. In hindsight, it’s a funny memory, but at that moment, it was pure panic.

2. The Quarter Horse Incident

Around six years ago, we visited a friend’s rural home that was not exactly child-proofed. After a night of socializing, I awoke to find my son, Jake, missing. After a frantic search around the house and yard, I discovered a shimmer of sunlight reflecting off the horse barn. I dashed over to find Jake happily standing between the legs of a rather large quarter horse named Thunder, who was playfully nibbling at his hair. Clad in pajamas and a diaper, Jake was grinning while I nearly lost my mind in the paddock. In my efforts to ensure everyone stayed away from the pool, I had completely forgotten to lock the front door.

3. The Birthday Mud Chaos of 2011

Not too long ago, we ventured out to the country again, and like any good redneck family, we created a new activity involving an old plastic slide, a souped-up golf cart, and a tow rope. Initially, it was a blast—until my husband and the driver thought it would be hilarious to drive the girls through what they believed was a shallow puddle. Spoiler alert: it was not. The so-called puddle turned out to be a mini lake, and the heavy slide promptly sank when it hit the water. The result? An unexpected tidal wave of mud that drenched the girls. And did I mention it was one of their birthdays? Talk about an EPIC fail.

Of course, we all experience the typical parenting mishaps—like when a kid misbehaves right before spiking a high fever, or when you forget sunscreen at the pool. However, the stories I shared are among my most memorable blunders. The beauty of these experiences is that they often transform into fond memories that bring laughter later. Now, when I exclaim, “This is the WORST birthday EVER!” my kids erupt in laughter. We all make mistakes, and I believe that finding humor in our parenting failures is essential for maintaining sanity. I look forward to more moments that will leave me feeling frustrated one minute and laughing uncontrollably the next.
