Mississippi has witnessed a troubling rise in stillbirths since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent reports reveal that the state’s stillbirth rate has doubled, with health officials expressing deep concern over the implications for expectant mothers and their babies. Dr. Michael Harris, Mississippi’s State Health Officer, highlighted during a recent press briefing that “COVID poses significant risks for pregnant individuals,” warning that it can lead to severe outcomes for the fetus as well.
“Since the pandemic started, we’ve seen a doubling of fetal demise, or the loss of a baby in the womb after 20 weeks,” Dr. Harris stated. “This is truly a tragic situation.” The statistics show that Mississippi has reported 72 fetal deaths linked to COVID-19, excluding any miscarriages that may have occurred before the 20-week threshold. Dr. Harris characterized these numbers as “twice the normal rate we would expect.”
Additionally, the state has seen seven child fatalities due to COVID-19, which Dr. Harris notes are tragic events that could have been avoided. Authorities have also observed an uptick in deaths among pregnant women, with over 1,500 expecting individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 since March 2020. “We are currently facing the Delta variant surge, and unfortunately, we have lost a significant number of pregnant women to COVID in recent weeks,” he remarked, noting that all were unvaccinated.
Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the CDC Director, has urged all pregnant individuals or those considering pregnancy, as well as breastfeeding mothers, to get vaccinated to safeguard themselves against COVID-19. “The vaccines are safe and effective, and it has never been more critical to enhance vaccination efforts as we combat the highly transmissible Delta variant and witness severe outcomes among unvaccinated pregnant individuals,” she stated.
