San Francisco Schools Report No COVID Outbreaks Since Reopening

Since the return to in-person classes on August 16, San Francisco schools have not experienced any COVID-19 outbreaks. The challenges surrounding mask mandates, vaccine misinformation, and general uncertainty about the virus have made the transition back to the classroom particularly daunting for students, parents, and educators alike. While some states grapple with the legality of mask mandates, leading to tragic outcomes—such as the loss of educators in Florida—other districts, including San Francisco, have enforced both mask and vaccine requirements for eligible students.

The San Francisco Department of Health confirmed on September 9 that there have been no school-related outbreaks since the new school year began. They emphasized the importance of masks and vaccinations in maintaining safety and achieving herd immunity, which could help transition COVID-19 from a pandemic to a manageable endemic illness. Notably, children under 18 have constituted less than 20% of overall cases during the pandemic, with 90% of students aged 12 to 17 in San Francisco fully vaccinated.

The report also highlighted resources available to support the high vaccination rates among students. These include free vaccinations, testing services, guidance on COVID safety measures, and contact tracing efforts within schools. Although some COVID cases have been reported in San Francisco, the majority have originated from outside school environments.

The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) noted 227 cases among nearly 52,000 students and 10,000 staff members, resulting in a low infection rate of 0.37%. An outbreak, as defined by the Department of Public Health, occurs when there are three or more cases linked to the school, not elsewhere. The statement concluded by reiterating that vaccinations remain the best defense against the virus, as many pediatric cases stem from unvaccinated adults transmitting the virus to their families.

It’s disheartening to see eligible adults still refusing vaccinations based on unfounded beliefs. For anyone needing further evidence of the vaccine’s life-saving potential, numerous videos exist of infected individuals in hospitals pleading for others to get vaccinated.
