In a poignant obituary that has gained significant attention, a mother and grandmother from Springfield, Illinois, has been remembered for her life while also calling out those who opted not to get vaccinated during the pandemic.
At 66 years old, Candace “Candy” Taylor received her second dose of the Moderna vaccine in March. However, in July, she contracted a breakthrough case of COVID-19 after visiting an unvaccinated friend. Following two emergency room visits, she was hospitalized with pneumonia and eventually placed on a ventilator. Despite some initial signs of recovery, she developed sepsis and sadly passed away on September 3.
In the heartfelt obituary penned by her children, they wrote, “She was preceded in death by more than 4,531,799 others infected with covid-19. She was vaccinated but became infected by those who chose not to be. The price was her life.”
Her daughter, Sarah Taylor, expressed the importance of the message behind her mother’s story. “My mom was lively, loving, and never hesitated to voice her thoughts,” she said. “The point I want to convey is that getting vaccinated transcends politics; it’s about taking responsibility and working collectively for the welfare of everyone.”
Remembered as “the best mom, wife, and grandma in the world,” Candy is survived by Sarah, her brother, Jake, and her husband, David, along with her three beloved five-year-old grandchildren, Lily, Max, and Sophie, who were the center of her universe.
Since the obituary was published, Sarah noted that the family has mostly received positive feedback, with many readers expressing support and even sharing that they got vaccinated after reading their story. “We have heard from many who appreciated our message and some even decided to get vaccinated because of it,” she said.
Candy had been fully vaccinated as she had a pre-existing condition, rheumatoid arthritis, which made her immunocompromised. When she visited an unvaccinated friend in Mississippi, she believed that her vaccination would protect her. “We’re a family grounded in science and trust in medical advice. It’s shocking how it didn’t safeguard my mom,” Jake told TODAY.
Regrettably, the family also faced backlash, including hostile messages from individuals who refuse vaccination. “My brother has received threats and been subjected to cruel comments. My father even got a call blaming him for my mother’s death. It’s disheartening,” Sarah remarked. “We need to pray for those people because it’s that kind of malice that prolongs this pandemic.”
Ultimately, Sarah stresses the importance of vaccination. “We won’t reach herd immunity or end this pandemic until we are all vaccinated; that is the plain truth. It will continue to mutate, leading to more losses. We must all get vaccinated and wear masks to protect one another, especially those vulnerable like my mother.”
