Alisha Morin is voicing her dissatisfaction with a new documentary that focuses on her life and career. The film, titled after her celebrated 1995 album, “Jagged Little Pill”, features extensive interviews she gave during a particularly vulnerable period, but she now claims the end result is sensationalized.
“I initially agreed to be part of what I thought would be a celebration of the 25th anniversary of ‘Jagged Little Pill.’ I was interviewed during a very sensitive time in my life, as I was grappling with my third postpartum depression during lockdown,” Morin stated. “I was misled into a false sense of security, only to realize that the film had a sensational agenda once I saw the first cut. At that point, I understood that our visions were painfully misaligned. This is not the narrative I consented to share.”
Morin has openly discussed her battles with postpartum depression after each of her three children. She revealed that recovering from the birth of her third child in 2019 was a lengthy process, compounded by the challenges of the pandemic, making it less than ideal for her to engage in deeply personal interviews.
While Morin refrained from criticizing specific parts of the documentary, she does share her reflections on past sexual encounters with five men starting at the age of 15. In the film, she expresses that her perspective on those experiences has shifted significantly with maturity.
“It took years of therapy for me to recognize that there had been any form of victimization on my part,” she explains. “I used to insist I was consenting, but then I was reminded that being 15 doesn’t equate to true consent. Now, I see it clearly—those were predatory acts, and it was statutory rape.”
Morin is now distancing herself from both the film and its director, Alison Klayman. “I find myself grappling with the consequences of having placed my trust in someone who didn’t deserve it,” she shared. “I have decided not to attend any events related to this film for two reasons: I am currently on tour, and like many unauthorized biographies, this one contains implications and facts that are simply inaccurate. While there is some beauty and accuracy in this story, I will not support a reductive interpretation of a narrative that is far too complex for them to convey.”
Klayman responded by expressing gratitude for Morin’s contributions to the film. “It’s incredibly tough to see a film made about oneself,” she remarked in an interview. “I think she’s incredibly brave. The effort and nuance that went into making this film are palpable, and she dedicated a lot of time and energy to it. The movie speaks for itself.”
The documentary is set to premiere on HBO on November 19.
