If you tuned into the Emmys recently, you may have felt a sense of unease regarding the event’s safety protocols. Many viewers noticed the large crowd of unmasked attendees packed tightly together. Even those present at the ceremony shared concerns about the apparent lack of COVID-19 precautions. When Seth Rogen took the stage to present one of the evening’s awards, he didn’t hold back on addressing the issue.
“Let me start with this: there are far too many people in this small space. What’s going on? We were told this was an outdoor event, but clearly, it’s not,” Rogen stated. The actor and comedian revealed that the attendees had been informed the Emmys would take place outside to reduce the risk of transmission, particularly with the surge of the delta variant in Los Angeles. However, upon arrival, they found the event was actually indoors, within a sealed tent lacking adequate ventilation.
“They deceived us. We’re in a completely enclosed tent right now,” Rogen expressed. “I wouldn’t have come if I had known. Why is there a roof? Apparently, it’s more crucial to have three chandeliers than to ensure we don’t put Eugene Levy at risk tonight. That’s what has been prioritized.”
He added humorously, “This is absurd. I went from sanitizing my groceries to having Paul Bettany sneeze in my face. What a wild week! If anyone’s going to sneeze on me, Paul, make it you. Alright, that’s all the jokes I prepared.”
While his comments were light-hearted, they sparked significant discussion online regarding the apparent deception by the Emmys’ organizers about safety measures. In response to the uproar, a public service announcement was aired later in the show, and host Cedric the Entertainer confirmed that all attendees had been required to be fully vaccinated and to provide a negative PCR test before the event. Whether these measures were sufficient to ensure safety remains to be seen.
